I mean, we’re facing a huge recession, I don’t know what the execs could’ve done wrong, but still it seems like an inopportune time to quit.

They probably know more than we do. Time to back up more of my TDIAH posts....

Because new-Gawker isn’t going so hot, something about morality maybe, who knows. But whatever is causing everyone to leave, it is absolutely not a good sign.

I can only imagine they’ve secured other opportunities prior to quiting, this makes most sense right?

It’s likely a domino effect: new ownership pissing everyone off, Patrick George leaves, one or two other key players leave, and then why stick around?
David Tracy turned down an attractive offer to leave because he values Jalopnik and its readership, and I don’t see Torch being as happy somewhere else where he’d be less free to post whatever in the world he wants, and I’m reasonably happy if they form the core of a new writing staff.

Big disagreements over the editorial lines under new ownership is what I’ve understood... Also, probably more money elsewhere. To give you a bit of a better understanding: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/30/business/media/deadspin-sports-staff.html

“Bailing out” (of a plane) or “J umping ship” (from a ship). But I love this combination.
And just to confuse you further, bailing water (out of a ship) refers to using a bucket to scoop water out of the boat so it doesn’t sink.
English is f*cking crazy.
Also, I have no idea, but I suspect there are bad things coming because they know something we don’t.

Who knows?

i dunno... seems to me most of the commenters bailed ship first
im guessing this is getting out before going down with the ship

Bailing, if on a ship, means you’re staying on board, attempting to keep it afloat. These folks are “jumping ship”. =)
Some going to greener pastures, not sure about Ballaban, but he could take any more Herb, sounds like.

I assume so. You have to really hate your workplace to quit without something lined up in the current environ ment.

Where did David have an offer from?

Probably doesn’t pay well even in a downturn, maybe they had to find more realistic jobs. Much of the content there wasn’t exactly the peak of professionalism, too.
There’ll be no recession, only winning. Winning, god damn it, you’re going to be sick and tired of winning!

I’m not confident I remember correctly , and I’m not sure he’s share d that information publicly.

You’d need a really big bucket to bail out a ship.

Back to him valuing the readership: a s frustrating as Kinja can be, it’s still way better than the commenting systems in place in most places, and that leads to an active , and often informed, comment section. I trust that The Drive will improve greatly with Patrick at the helm.

It’s by design. The Jellopnick site hires people with a minimum amount of writing experience from places like Oppo and VWVortex, and then pays them a bare minimum . Eventually the good ones move on to a better writing job at somewhere like R&T .
It’s not a career job, it’s a springboard job. It works because the writers get better offers somewhere else, and then some other random jagoff will come along and work for cheap to replace them .

I know the FP gets a lot of shit here, both the content and the comments, but I’ve always found it to be a pretty welcoming place on the whole.
David wrote an epic note about why he left Chrysler in comments, yesterday I think. I need to dig that up and share it as an Oppo post.

My first thought was to check out TheDrive’s commenting system. The first article I checked, I found this:
